High card means your best five cards make no pair, straight, flush or stronger combination. Compare all five ranks from highest to lowest until the first difference. Having an ace is not enough to beat another ace-high hand; the lower cards may decide it.

Where high card ranks

High card is the weakest standard high-poker category. Any pair beats it, even a pair of twos against ace-high. Within high-card hands, ace is normally highest; A-2-3-4-5 is a straight instead of an ace-high hand. Use the complete hand-ranking chart to compare different categories.

A five-card example and how to compare it

A♥ K♠ J♦ 8♥ 6♣

A-Q-9-7-3 beats A-J-10-8-4 because queen beats jack at the first different rank. K-Q-J-9-8 beats K-Q-J-9-7 on the fifth card. No suit ordering is used. Always check that neither set actually contains a straight or flush before calling it high card.

Test a Texas Hold'em showdown

You and one opponent have reached showdown on this board. Decide whether you win, lose or split, and name your best five cards before revealing the answer.

Reveal the comparison

You split with A-K-J-8-6. Both aces improve the board, but neither the four nor the three reaches the best five cards. Your higher second hole card does not count as a sixth-card tiebreaker.

Playing the board or using only one hole card

Hold'em does not require you to use both hole cards. In the exercise above, each player uses one ace and four board cards. With a board such as A-K-J-8-6 in mixed suits, 4-3 may use none of its hole cards. Someone holding a queen could replace the six with that queen and win, provided neither player has a stronger combination. Read all seven available cards, not just the two you were dealt.

Common mistakes with high card

  • Ace-high loses to any made pair at showdown.
  • An unused hole card does not settle an otherwise identical five-card hand.
  • A high-card hand can still win a pot before showdown if every opponent folds; that does not change the ranking rules.

How often does high card occur in five cards?

Exactly this category occurs in 1,302,540 of 2,598,960 random five-card hands (50.117739%). Choose five different ranks from 13 and exclude the ten straight sequences. For each remaining rank set, use any of 4⁵ suit assignments except the four all-one-suit flushes. That gives (C(13, 5) − 10) × (4⁵ − 4) = 1,302,540 high-card hands.

This model uses a standard 52-card deck, no wild cards and no known cards. It is not the chance of your best five from seven at a Hold'em river, or your chance of beating the other player. The five-card probability explorer compares categories under the same assumptions.

What to practise next

Continue with how one pair beats high card. At the play-chip training table, name the five cards you use before reading the showdown result. A hand's category alone does not tell you whether to call a bet; pot odds and equity address that separate question.
