Two pair is two cards of one rank, two of another and one kicker. Compare the higher pair first, then the lower pair, then the fifth card. A-A-3-3-2 beats K-K-Q-Q-A because the aces are compared before either lower pair or kicker.
Where two pair ranks
Two pair beats one pair and high card. It loses to three of a kind and every stronger category. Three pairs among seven cards are not a separate category: select the best two pairs and the best available fifth card. Use the complete hand-ranking chart to compare different categories.
A five-card example and how to compare it
J♠ J♦ 5♥ 5♣ A♥
K-K-9-9-4 beats K-K-8-8-A: after the kings tie, the nines beat the eights, so the ace never gets compared. If both pairs match, J-J-5-5-A beats J-J-5-5-K. There is room for only one kicker; a second spare hole card cannot help.
Test a Texas Hold'em showdown
You and one opponent have reached showdown on this board. Decide whether you win, lose or split, and name your best five cards before revealing the answer.
| Cards | Holding |
|---|---|
| Shared board | J♠ J♦ 5♥ 5♣ 2♠ |
| Your hole cards | A♥ K♣ |
| Opponent's hole cards | A♦ Q♣ |
Reveal the comparison
You split. Each player has jacks and fives with an ace kicker. Your king and the opponent's queen are sixth cards and cannot break the tie. Both pairs come from the board.
Your best five: J♠ J♦ 5♥ 5♣ A♥
How a small pair can be counterfeited
Hold 4-4 on a flop of K-7-7. You currently have sevens and fours. If the turn is a king, the board now supplies kings and sevens, so your fours are no longer one of the best two pairs. An opponent holding an ace can use that ace as a kicker. This illustrates why improving the board does not always improve your relative position. A final river card can change the comparison again.
Common mistakes with two pair
- Do not add the two pair ranks together to choose a winner.
- A high kicker cannot rescue a losing lower pair.
- A paired board can give everyone one of the pairs, so the hand's name alone does not show its strength.
How often does two pair occur in five cards?
Exactly this category occurs in 123,552 of 2,598,960 random five-card hands (4.753902%). Choose two pair ranks from 13, choose two suits for each pair, then one of 11 remaining ranks and four suits for the kicker: C(13, 2) × 6² × 11 × 4 = 123,552. The kicker must not share either pair rank.
This model uses a standard 52-card deck, no wild cards and no known cards. It is not the chance of your best five from seven at a Hold'em river, or your chance of beating the other player. The five-card probability explorer compares categories under the same assumptions.
What to practise next
Continue with one pair and all three of its kickers. At the play-chip training table, name the five cards you use before reading the showdown result. A hand's category alone does not tell you whether to call a bet; pot odds and equity address that separate question.
